This blog post is slightly more technical than previous blog posts so don’t say I didn’t tell you. Your on-page SEO plan begins with your home page:

(1) Your page title should contain your most important keyword phrases and your target geographical locations, a home page titled “home” has no benefit

(2) The Googlebot will read your metatags so you should have keywords, description and whatever you like in the header.

(3) Use an identity collector above the fold – in the top half of your page trade PDFs of your special knowledge for names and email addresses. Collect identities.

(4) No Adobe Flash. Embed your YouTube video, use HTML and CSS, present JPEGs attractively, use keywords appropriately in ALT tags and captions. Flash and words in images can not be indexed.

(5) Use 72 DPI and make your JPEGS well under 500 MB to keep your page’s load time to a minimum.

(6) Use headlines, teaser text and a link to Do You Want To Know More, not paragraph after paragraph of text.

(7) Use your keywords appropriately and frequently – you want optimized text but not keyword stuffing.

Alright, you have this attractive website, it loads fast, your URL is either your brand or a keyword or both and you want link building external SEO to get Google page one ranking search results.

If your linked page is about apricots, your link building should be based on apricot keywords. If you build links based on watermelons and your linked page is about apricots your links will be shot down as irrelevant no matter how brilliant the anchor text is.

Will A YouTube Video Help My Business?

Google owns YouTube. Google places high value on YouTube videos.

Doing two 60 – 90 second videos, then uploading them to YouTube can be done inexpensively. A PowerPoint slide show plus voiceover, video touring around your facilities with voiceover, or a simple “talking head” these are not costly or difficult.

Here are some tips:

(1) YouTube account should have a keyword or your business name (preferably something that is both),

(2) Use business keyword phrases in your video TITLE and DESCRIPTION and TAGS,

(3) Business name, website and contact info in the video,

(4) Keep your video short, 60 – 90 seconds,

(5) Post your videos to Facebook and other social networking sites using the YouTube URL or the YouTube embedding code (do not upload the video newly elsewhere),

(6) Use the YouTube embedding code to add the video to your website (again, do not upload the video newly),

(7) Boost your video “in-house” by favoriting and liking the video.

Once you’ve got a video, if you like some things about it and you don’t like other aspects, I recommend that you upload it to YouTube now. Waiting for a perfect video invites procrastination. Just resolve to make your next video better.

How to Find Ideal Keywords for Your Business

If you manufacture a sheet-fed rotary offset printing machine, your potential clients may be referring to your product less accurately as a printing press. Even though “sheet-fed rotary offset printing machine” is more correct, “printing press” might be more widely used in searches.

But let’s say your customers are printers who routinely use the industry terminology, then “offset printing machine” may be a better keyword.

Here’s two tips on finding good keywords:

(1) Survey your Customers. Keep surveys short (3 – 5 questions). If you like, give away a promotional item in exchange for their help, for example a calendar or a tee shirt, an inexpensive giveaway. Everybody likes free stuff, and very few people object to being consulted for their opinion.

(2) Check on what your most successful competitors are doing. Go to their website’s home page and in the VIEW menu of your browser select SOURCE. Look for the meta tags which will look like this (less-than and greater-than “angle brackets” omitted):

Compare what you’ve gotten in (1) and (2) above with the keywords you are using on your own website, in your pay-per-click campaign or other internet advertising campaign. Advertising usually works best when focused on your specific market so your keywords should be regularly reviewed.
