SEO Tip: Content Is King

SEO Tip: Content Is King

On the internet, the rule is CONTENT IS KING.

Never less, always more. Don’t revise when you can expand. Do, don’t re-do, unless you feel that you absolutely must and if you have to re-do then add more than before.

That’s all very passionate but what does it look like in practical terms?

I’ll tell you:

That blog you’re not posting to? Going forward, load it with pictures. Every picture has a TITLE, an ALT tag (HTML for ALTernative text) a CAPTION and those TITLES, ALT tags and CAPTIONS include your keyword phrases appropriately and naturally.

Communicate your product or service visually. Show what you do. You can use before and after pictures, pictures of your staff, pictures of your products, pictures of happy customers and any other pictures you like that show off your work.

If a client is delighted with the your product or service, ask if it’s OK if you shoot a video of their testimonial for your YouTube channel. Clients are usually flattered that you asked and say yes. It’s OK if the video is not pro shot – actually, by survey a testimonial video has more credibility if it’s not pro shot.

While you’re talking to that happy Customer (which is fun because they love you) you can ask “Do you know anyone who might benefit from our services?”

Put the testimonial video on YouTube and I can optimize and popularize your video. Putting a link to a YouTube video on your blog will display your video in your blog and by including video it’s not just picture – picture – picture – picture etc.

When I say “you” above, I don’t literally mean you. Delegate as you see fit (sales people, marketing people, what have you).

You don’t need to take down old content, you can start using your existing blog for pictures and video without any announcement to do so.

Get a Mobile-Friendly Aggregator Newsblog accumulating relevant content for you which you curate by making comments and posting your own news. A Newsblog is part of your SEO strategy. Again, when I say “you”, I don’t literally mean you.

Whether you do some or all of the above, consider that CONTENT IS KING and think about what text, images and video you’d like to make available to the public.

Take care, be well, have fun,

Tom Jacoby

On-Page SEO With A Note On Link Building

On-Page SEO With A Note On Link Building

This blog post is slightly more technical than previous blog posts so don’t say I didn’t tell you. Your on-page SEO plan begins with your home page:

(1) Your page title should contain your most important keyword phrases and your target geographical locations, a home page titled “home” has no benefit

(2) The Googlebot will read your metatags so you should have keywords, description and whatever you like in the header.

(3) Use an identity collector above the fold – in the top half of your page trade PDFs of your special knowledge for names and email addresses. Collect identities.

(4) No Adobe Flash. Embed your YouTube video, use HTML and CSS, present JPEGs attractively, use keywords appropriately in ALT tags and captions. Flash and words in images can not be indexed.

(5) Use 72 DPI and make your JPEGS well under 500 MB to keep your page’s load time to a minimum.

(6) Use headlines, teaser text and a link to Do You Want To Know More, not paragraph after paragraph of text.

(7) Use your keywords appropriately and frequently – you want optimized text but not keyword stuffing.

Alright, you have this attractive website, it loads fast, your URL is either your brand or a keyword or both and you want link building external SEO to get Google page one ranking search results.

If your linked page is about apricots, your link building should be based on apricot keywords. If you build links based on watermelons and your linked page is about apricots your links will be shot down as irrelevant no matter how brilliant the anchor text is.

There’s your 7 tips for on-page SEO with a note on link building. Contact me, Tom at NumberOneOnTheList.com, for a free website analysis.

Will A YouTube Video Help My Business?

Will A YouTube Video Help My Business?

Google owns YouTube. Google places high value on YouTube videos.

Doing two 60 – 90 second videos, then uploading them to YouTube can be done inexpensively. A PowerPoint slide show plus voiceover, video touring around your facilities with voiceover, or a simple “talking head” these are not costly or difficult.

Here are some tips:

(1) YouTube account should have a keyword or your business name (preferably something that is both),

(2) Use business keyword phrases in your video TITLE and DESCRIPTION and TAGS,

(3) Business name, website and contact info in the video,

(4) Keep your video short, 60 – 90 seconds,

(5) Post your videos to Facebook and other social networking sites using the YouTube URL or the YouTube embedding code (do not upload the video newly elsewhere),

(6) Use the YouTube embedding code to add the video to your website (again, do not upload the video newly),

(7) Boost your video “in-house” by favoriting and liking the video.

Once you’ve got a video, if you like some things about it and you don’t like other aspects, I recommend that you upload it to YouTube now. Waiting for a perfect video invites procrastination. Just resolve to make your next video better.

At NumberOneOnTheList.com we popularize YouTube videos. Here’s an example:

Sundad Father and Son Acoustic guitar duo April 04, 2010 – Sundad “Voyage” Video.

From 4 Apr – 10 Apr this video got about 34 views. On 11 Apr NumberOneOnTheList.com began working for Sundad.

Take a look at the number of video views Sundad has now.

You could popularize one video or popularize 5 videos (Google Places allows you to link to 5) as part of one of NumberOneOnTheList.com‘s discounted search engine optimization packages.

Keywords, Titles and Descriptions

Keywords, Titles and Descriptions

Meta tags provide information about webpages to help search engines categorize them correctly. Meta tags are part of the HTML coding, but are not directly visible to a user visiting the site.

To see your meta tags, go to your website’s home page and in the VIEW menu of your browser select SOURCE. Look for the meta tags (near the top, in the “head” section) which will look like this:

NumberOneOnTheList.com views meta tags as an important part of search engine optimization. The meta data is viewed and recorded by search engine automated programs (crawlers) and there’s no downside to using meta tags. The SEO community agrees that your Title is vital.

3 important meta elements:

(1) Keywords – Pick the best keywords you can by looking at your business the way a potential customer about to search the internet might look. Use surveys, look at your competition’s website and find the keywords that your target market uses.

(2) Description – The meta description will appear in the Google search listing for your webpage. Use your keywords appropriately and make it as compelling as you can so the searcher visits your webpage. Use 160 characters or less.

(3) Title – Use your keywords, condense your description and make sure you put the best one’s first.

The limit for your Title is 70 characters on most search engines. There is no penalty for going over but the search engines with the 70 character limit will not read more than that. I usually go beyond the 70 characters.

Notice that both your Description and your Title back up your keywords by using them. This is further supported by using keywords in the text in the body of the page. Don’t try to use keywords constantly, use them when on-point and relevant.

Although meta tags should be reviewed from time to time (about as often as you’d do a complete website redesign) do not change your meta information frequently.
