Google On Google

The best source of information on Google that I know of is (drum roll) Google.

Here are four GoogleWebmasterHelp YouTube videos which I have attempted to arrange in order of increasing technicality. All four videos show Google’s Matt Cutts answering questions about Google.

The GoogleWebmasterHelp videos are only part of many Google sources of info on Google. Where are the rest? Do a Google search and find them.

What are some of the things on your radar, or some of the trends in search you’d like to talk about?

What are some search trends on your radar?

A recent article of Danny Sullivan suggests that Google uses Twitter and Facebook links as a ranking signal. Can you confirm this? Can you elaborate a little bit more on this?

Does Google use data from social sites in ranking?

Name 5 examples of SEO misinformation from the past year given by reputable persons that made you want to bang your head against the wall. (You don’t need to name names.)

What are some examples of SEO misinformation?

We have a Q&A section with 10 questions per page. The oldest questions, which are some of the best, are buried on the 4th or 5th page and are not showing up in searches. Do you have any advice on how to implement paging?

How can I improve my linking on a Q&A site?

Examples of DIY (Do It Yourself) YouTube Videos

Examples of DIY (Do It Yourself) YouTube Videos

Windows XP came with some basic video editing software, Windows Movie Maker. You can drag and drop movies or JPEGs into Windows Movie Maker.

If you use text in your JPEGs, I suggest that you use a musical soundtrack instead of a voiceover. Having one set of words on the video while the voiceover says different things is not a pleasant experience for the viewer.

Use your own JPEGs and music to avoid copyright violations or intellectual property infringement. Play a musical instrument? Know someone in a band? Or troll the net for music in the public domain.

Another way to go is to write a script, point a camera at yourself and have at it. I read through the script a couple of times to get comfortable then do 2 or 3 takes until it’s acceptably right (going for “perfect” may overshoot what’s needed here).

My approach to YouTube promotional video is get it done, get it uploaded, get it popularized and take a new look at it before doing the next one. Resolve to make the next one “better” whatever that is – more polished, more professional, more compelling, prettier.

Taking a couple of hours to do a video which is now online is infinitely better than planning or working on a video that is not online.

Quantity now is much more important than perfection later in my humble opinion and I think my 4 example videos demonstrate that.

Will A YouTube Video Help My Business?

Will A YouTube Video Help My Business?

Google owns YouTube. Google places high value on YouTube videos.

Doing two 60 – 90 second videos, then uploading them to YouTube can be done inexpensively. A PowerPoint slide show plus voiceover, video touring around your facilities with voiceover, or a simple “talking head” these are not costly or difficult.

Here are some tips:

(1) YouTube account should have a keyword or your business name (preferably something that is both),

(2) Use business keyword phrases in your video TITLE and DESCRIPTION and TAGS,

(3) Business name, website and contact info in the video,

(4) Keep your video short, 60 – 90 seconds,

(5) Post your videos to Facebook and other social networking sites using the YouTube URL or the YouTube embedding code (do not upload the video newly elsewhere),

(6) Use the YouTube embedding code to add the video to your website (again, do not upload the video newly),

(7) Boost your video “in-house” by favoriting and liking the video.

Once you’ve got a video, if you like some things about it and you don’t like other aspects, I recommend that you upload it to YouTube now. Waiting for a perfect video invites procrastination. Just resolve to make your next video better.

At NumberOneOnTheList.com we popularize YouTube videos. Here’s an example:

Sundad Father and Son Acoustic guitar duo April 04, 2010 – Sundad “Voyage” Video.

From 4 Apr – 10 Apr this video got about 34 views. On 11 Apr NumberOneOnTheList.com began working for Sundad.

Take a look at the number of video views Sundad has now.

You could popularize one video or popularize 5 videos (Google Places allows you to link to 5) as part of one of NumberOneOnTheList.com‘s discounted search engine optimization packages.

Keywords, Titles and Descriptions

Keywords, Titles and Descriptions

Meta tags provide information about webpages to help search engines categorize them correctly. Meta tags are part of the HTML coding, but are not directly visible to a user visiting the site.

To see your meta tags, go to your website’s home page and in the VIEW menu of your browser select SOURCE. Look for the meta tags (near the top, in the “head” section) which will look like this:

NumberOneOnTheList.com views meta tags as an important part of search engine optimization. The meta data is viewed and recorded by search engine automated programs (crawlers) and there’s no downside to using meta tags. The SEO community agrees that your Title is vital.

3 important meta elements:

(1) Keywords – Pick the best keywords you can by looking at your business the way a potential customer about to search the internet might look. Use surveys, look at your competition’s website and find the keywords that your target market uses.

(2) Description – The meta description will appear in the Google search listing for your webpage. Use your keywords appropriately and make it as compelling as you can so the searcher visits your webpage. Use 160 characters or less.

(3) Title – Use your keywords, condense your description and make sure you put the best one’s first.

The limit for your Title is 70 characters on most search engines. There is no penalty for going over but the search engines with the 70 character limit will not read more than that. I usually go beyond the 70 characters.

Notice that both your Description and your Title back up your keywords by using them. This is further supported by using keywords in the text in the body of the page. Don’t try to use keywords constantly, use them when on-point and relevant.

Although meta tags should be reviewed from time to time (about as often as you’d do a complete website redesign) do not change your meta information frequently.

Links to Other Websites?

Links to Other Websites?

There are website administrators who feel like they’re shooting themselves in the foot by including outbound links to other websites. One false idea is that having outbound links will hurt a website’s Google ranking by canceling out your inbound links.

Another concern is why take the time and effort and spend money popularizing your company’s website and then say, in effect, “Here’s your hat, there’s the door” by providing links to other websites?

Linking out doesn’t do anything negative at all so long as you link to (1) pages with relevant content, (2) pages with the same or higher PageRank than yours, (3) .edu and .gov websites as school and the government are viewed as relevant to everything. Linking out doesn’t drain authority from your site.

The truth is that you should be linking out to sites that are pertinent to your page’s content. Outbound links to quality sites with relevant content to your website is usually positive for your site’s Google ranking. At worst, the outlink has no effect.

Outbound links that will hurt your Google ranking are links to “Link Farms.” A Link Farm is typically a group of web sites that all hyperlink to every other site in the group through automated programs. Link Farming is a form of spam that targets the index of search engines (aka spamdexing).

Websites exchanging links with other relevant websites are not considered spamdexing. The practice of linking to other relevant information is useful to visitors to your website and is important in making your website a valuable resource.

Don’t create a links page of outbound links on your website because the relevancy of the diverse links in not always apparent to a search engine. It is better to include the outbound link at the point where it comes up in your content – for example, if you say you are a member of the Chamber Of Commerce then you can link to the Chamber Of Commerce right there.

Links between relevant sites with good Google ranking are mutually beneficial. There is no cause for concern that outbound links might harm your site’s reputation. Part of marketing your website is to become an Opinion Leader providing high quality content relevant to your line of work. Including links to other experts in your field is logical and helpful.
