Five Dollars Down And Seventy Five Cents A Week by Bruce Wiseman, Special Guest Blogger

It is a great pleasure to present Special Guest Blogger Bruce Wiseman, bruce@ontargetresearch.com author and Master Marketer. $5 Down And $.75 A Week by Bruce Wiseman

When my father was a young man, he stowed away on a tramp steamer to Hawaii.

He was a tough little guy who had boxed in his youth and had the nose to prove it. But he also had the gift of the pitch. And once in the land of many Alohas, he traveled door-to-door selling the hot, new vacuum-tube Philco radios to the islanders. It was the beginning of broadcasting’s Golden Age, and he did well.

When he returned stateside he opened an appliance store in Berkeley and the rest, as they say….

Well…perhaps not quite history, but the store in Berkeley was the first of what became an extremely successful chain of home furnishing stores throughout the San Francisco East Bay Area in the 40s, 50s,and 60s.

The key to his success was advertising – lots of it.

No pay-per-click budgets to monitor, no social media to maintain, no websites to optimize. “Traffic” was driven into the store by traditional media where you could engage the prospects in conversation and sell them.

In the early days, he used print exclusively; later, he added radio and a bit of television.

He was a master at negotiating great pricing from the manufacturers, which he passed along to his customers, but if there was a single key to his success, it was heavy promotion.

He was the Cal Worthington of the Bay Area Home Furnishing world. It may not have been the most sophisticated position, but it worked.

My dad and the WISEMAN’S brand are long gone. So imagine my surprise when my youngest daughter, in a self-motivated journey into our family’s genealogy, stumbled across her grandfather’s earliest ads promoting the opening of his first store, and sent them to me.

Here is an historically interesting look at one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s more successful merchandisers (he was Northern California’s most successful Frigidiare dealer in the mid twentieth century.)

The ads themselves aren’t particularly unique, but note the financing terms! Even in 1940, $.75 a week had to attract interest. Selling “terms” was another of his successful actions.

But put a bib on before scrolling much further so you when you drool at the prices, it doesn’t get on your shirt or blouse.

There is more about one of the most successful new marketing actions below the pictures, but take a scroll through the advertising of 70 years ago and then pick up the narrative below.

Some things have changed.

Yes, merchants still advertise in newspapers, but traditional advertising revenue has been falling like the President’s poll numbers. Ad revenue has fallen 48% since 2006. Some of the country’s most preeminent newspapers have gone under, while even the venerable New York Times recently announced staff reductions due to “a deteriorating advertising climate”.

Meanwhile, online advertising continues to soar because that is where the public shops today. E-commerce is projected to have reached $680 billion in 2011, an increase of 18.9% over 2010. No surprise then that Internet advertising amounted to $26.04 billion in 2010 making it the second largest advertising channel behind television at $28 billion, but surpassing newspapers at $22 billion.

If you’re in business, if you sell a product or service, you had better have a website.

But, of course, a website isn’t enough. You have to get the shoppers to your site. You can promote your website address, of course, and should. But consider the following information from www.slumdogmarketer.com:

97 % of American Internet users use the Internet to shop (NPD Group).

And, 63% of consumers turn to the Internet first for information about local companies.

But here is the critical fact: according to a study by Webvisible.com and Nielson Online, 82% use search engines to find what they are looking for (Google has 64% of the search engine traffic, Yahoo has 18% and Microsoft’s Bing has 12%).

Which raises the question: are your ad dollars properly allocated?

The Webvisible/Nielson study also found that the top sources for local information by shoppers were:

Search Engines = 82%
Yellow Pages = 57%
Local Newspapers = 53%
Internet Yellow Pages = 49%
Television = 49%
Direct Mail = 38%
White Pages = 32%

All of which has given rise to the creation of an entire new niche in the world of marketing. It’s called Search Engine Optimization(SEO). Likely you’ve heard of it. And likely you’ve been solicited by SEO companies from the four corners of the globe, promising high search engine placement.

The competition for SEO business is so intense that I even received an unsolicited call from an SEO company, in Mubai the other day.

These companies specialize in increasing the search engine rankingof your website.

Why?

The story is told in some detail by an inadvertent leak of a massive amount of keyword search data by AOL (AOL uses Google search). The leak involved 20 million key-words searched by 650,000 users over a period of three months. The leak was in 2006, but remains revealing.

If you want to know how important the ranking of your website is on a search engine page take a look:

If your are in the #1 position on the page you get 42.1% of the clicks.

#2 position, 11.9% of the clicks — 3.5x less than #1

#3 position, 8.5% of the clicks — 4.9x less than #1

#4 position, 6.1% of the clicks — 6.9x less than #1

#5 position, 4.9% of the clicks — 8.5x less than #1

#6 position, 4.1% of the clicks — 10.4x less than #1

#7 position, 3.4% of the clicks — 12.3x less than #1

#8 position, 3% of the clicks — 14x less than #1

#9 position, 2.85% of the clicks — 14.8x less than #1

(The leaked data is widely available on the Internet. This math courtesy of Netmark.com.)

So, simple basics:

1- To survive in today’s business world, you must have a website.

2- The website must be responsive to search engine queries about the product or service you sell.

3- The higher you are ranked on the search engine, the better your chance of attracting business. Too far into the bowels of the search engine, you are out of communication with your public.

As you can see, your search engine ranking is critical to your marketing.

Which in turn leads me to share a success with you that will blow you mind.

A friend of mine in New York named Tom Jacoby, does search engine optimization. But he has developed a unique methodology that drives your website up the search engine pages like a heat- seeking missile.

I know, this sounds like a commercial, but bear with me, this is startling.

He ties your product or service to a location:

Sandals, Honolulu

Pawn Shop, Las Vegas

Vegan Market, Berkeley

Tires, Daytona

Organic Dog Food, Santa Monica

Cosmetic Surgery, Beverly Hills

You get seven zip codes or cities and seven key words. So, for example, a beauty saloon in Burbank could have

Beauty Saloon Burbank

Hair Coloring Burbank

Hair and Make-Up Burbank

Pedicure Burbank

Hair Extentions Burbank

Highlights and Coloring Burbank

Hair Pieces and Wigs Burbank

Then, in addition, they would get these same seven key-words in six other jurisdictions, say, for example: Toluca Lake, Universal City, Sunland, Glendale, Hollywood, North Hollywood. Seven cities, seven key-words.

And boy does it work.

An On Target client, to whom we referred Tom earlier in the year, has had a handsome affluence running for months, attributable in part to this service.

But let me get personal. One might think that this would only work for a local business. Not so. I engaged the service for On Target Research some months ago. We aren’t local; our clients are all over the United States. So I picked 7 key cities and 7 key words and turned Tom loose.

One of the survey services that large corporate clients often seek is Customer Loyalty Surveys. This was one of the key words I used in seven major cities across the country.

The result?

If you put “Customer Loyalty Surveys Los Angeles” into Google, you will see that we are number one on the list. We are also number one for “Customer Loyalty Surveys New York”. Number two on the list for Chicago.

Did this help our sales? On Target has just had its best year in over a decade.

Tom’s SEO works, and is embarrassingly affordable.

His company is www.numberoneonthelist.com. You can reach him at tom@numberoneonthelist.com or 917-338-9586.

Tell him I sent you. He gives a discount and an added key word to my clients and friends.

I hope this helps you to have an outrageously prosperous 2012!

And let me know when you need to have surveys done.

Best,

Bruce Wiseman

Press Release: NumberOneOnTheList.com Offers New Discounts On Link Building Search Engine Optimization Services And More For Veterans

Press Release: NumberOneOnTheList.com Offers New Discounts On Link Building Search Engine Optimization Services And More For Veterans

Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell sponsors a salute to our Veterans, the Veterans Recognition Program. For 3 years NumberOneOnTheList.com is a proud participant, offering discounted link building external Search Engine Optimization starter packages (AKA off-page SEO) to build up search engine ranking. NumberOneOnTheList.com has expanded the discount to include additional SEO and SEM services such as Optimized Press Releasesand Autoblogs.

“Osama bin Laden has been taken out and many of our servicemen and women will be coming home and entering the workforce soon. I expect a significant percentage of our returning Veterans will be creating their own businesses and NumberOneOnTheList.com is pleased to back them up,” said Tom Jacoby, Vice President.

The County Clerk’s Office records Veteran Discharge (DD-214) papers free of charge in recognition of their service to America. Upon recording the original copy, the veteran will be eligible for discounts on NumberOneOnTheList.com services. NumberOneOnTheList.com does link building external Search Engine Optimization (AKA off-page SEO) to build up search engine ranking like this: the client’s keyword phrases plus the locations that the client has chosen to target are used to create many articles linking to the client’s website from the most popular, high authority websites on the internet, top rated web 2.0 sites. These links increase search engine ranking because the search engines use both the number of links to a site and the quality of the linking websites (“backlinks”) to determine what a website’s ranking should be. Each of these high traffic web 2.0 sites links out to an even larger number of the best bookmarking sites. The process repeats and each backlink to a client’s website is buffered by two layers of strong websites – the client gets the search engine ranking benefit as if the client had posted many links directly to his website.

“Being in an internet business since 1997 and specializing in Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing for years has been an education in using the proven, workable methods for internet marketing and advertising,” said Tom Jacoby. “If you over-use automation, you get too many rejects and if you do everything manually it takes too long to get anything done. The balance is the right level of automation to assist human productivity. NumberOneOnTheList.com can build up anyone’s search engine ranking. Guaranteed.”

A suggested approach to creating a prominent business website:

– Do a Google search for your product or service. Find a few websites you like and discuss them, decide on the features you like the best.

– Continue or revise your own brand, your identity, who your business is, what your business does and what your Customers get from you.

– What are the keywords and phrases your potential customers use to describe your business? how do Customers find your business? Questions for your Customers might be “How did you hear about us?” or “How did you find our product or service?”

– Where are your Customers? Your accounting records can show you where the majority of your customers are. You can draw a circle on the map with your location in the center. You can target that new office park or development.

You’ve gotten some good information on

(1) ideas for your website
(2) your business identity or brand
(3) your keyword phrases
(4) the locations you want to service

And you’re ready to claim your territory on the internet.

Phonebooks are 20th Century paperweights. Everybody looks for everything on the internet. Put your business where Customers are looking. Get it all done at a deep discount. The bottom line question is “How many new customers, that you would not gotten otherwise, will it take for the return on investment to work for you?”

Take care, be well, have fun,

Keywords, Titles and Descriptions

Keywords, Titles and Descriptions

Meta tags provide information about webpages to help search engines categorize them correctly. Meta tags are part of the HTML coding, but are not directly visible to a user visiting the site.

To see your meta tags, go to your website’s home page and in the VIEW menu of your browser select SOURCE. Look for the meta tags (near the top, in the “head” section) which will look like this:

NumberOneOnTheList.com views meta tags as an important part of search engine optimization. The meta data is viewed and recorded by search engine automated programs (crawlers) and there’s no downside to using meta tags. The SEO community agrees that your Title is vital.

3 important meta elements:

(1) Keywords – Pick the best keywords you can by looking at your business the way a potential customer about to search the internet might look. Use surveys, look at your competition’s website and find the keywords that your target market uses.

(2) Description – The meta description will appear in the Google search listing for your webpage. Use your keywords appropriately and make it as compelling as you can so the searcher visits your webpage. Use 160 characters or less.

(3) Title – Use your keywords, condense your description and make sure you put the best one’s first.

The limit for your Title is 70 characters on most search engines. There is no penalty for going over but the search engines with the 70 character limit will not read more than that. I usually go beyond the 70 characters.

Notice that both your Description and your Title back up your keywords by using them. This is further supported by using keywords in the text in the body of the page. Don’t try to use keywords constantly, use them when on-point and relevant.

Although meta tags should be reviewed from time to time (about as often as you’d do a complete website redesign) do not change your meta information frequently.

Take care, be well, have fun,

The Menu by Bruce Wiseman, Special Guest Blogger

It is a great pleasure to present Special Guest Blogger Bruce Wiseman, bruce@ontargetresearch.com author and Master Marketer. Visit Bruce’s company website at http://www.ontargetresearch.com for more information on the benefits available for your company with correct use of the technology of Marketing and Positioning.

The Menu by Bruce Wiseman

I stepped outside my Chicago hotel last week into a piranha-like wind with icicle teeth.

The only reason I left the 75 degree sunshine of La La land was to do a couple of television shows there to promote my book on the financial crisis.

The marketing campaign around the book (Crisis by Design The Untold Story of the Global Financial Coup) has been enlightening.

We are using two major marketing initiatives to promote it. The first is a traditional media-based PR campaign which involves radio interviews on stations across the country. Big, small, nationally syndicated or local news talk, I have been on the phone at all hours of day and night. Book sales are responding.

And, there is the occasional television appearance as in the land many winds noted above. The media campaign is being run by good friend, Marsha Friedman’s company, Event Management Services ( http://emsincorporated.com).

The second front is social media: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and, the heart and soul of social media today, blogging. I had to be dragged to the later realization like a dog to a bath by friend and social media maven, Doug Hay (http://doughayassoc.com/ ) who kindly stuck my nose in the stats.

We took a look at Google Analytics (a free service provided by the Lord of the Internet at http://www.google.com/analytics/ that focuses a digital microscope on your website traffic and gives you the kind of analysis that makes the marketing Gods smile.) While we could see the bump in the number of people visiting the site from radio shows (let’s hear it for talk radio), overall, the traffic driven to the site from social media – blogging, Facebook and Twitter and LinkedIn – exceeded the media driven visitors.

The point here is not to shy away from traditional PR, no, no – especially if you are an author. The point is that I had considered social media a step child in the campaign until I looked at the numbers.

It’s not that I didn’t know social media was valuable. Indeed, the shift in the media landscape in recent years and the power of social media to attract customers has been is a major reason that we have expanded our menu of services. Indeed, like a customer in a fine Chinese restaurant you can now select one or more services from the following menu. We can do it all, but if so, you better man up your phones, as you are likely to get a serious influx of traffic.

I do some of these personally, and for some I bring in professional associates who have proven their chops with me and my clients time and again.

SURVEYS. The house specialty. Our signature offering. We have been conducting surveys of customers and prospects for companies large and small for a quarter of a century. We are very good at it. Pricing on these vary depending on the public to be surveyed and the size of the job.

ONLINE SURVEYS. We also conduct online surveys, made much easier these days if you have an email data base of your clients, or prospects or can get one. Here we can create the survey, post it on line and write an invitation for you to send out with a link to the survey. We tabulate the results and provide an analysis with recommendations based on the results.

Analysis and recommendations, I might add, that are honed with the experience of a quarter of a century of professional expertise.

Surveys will provide you with the feedback from your clients and prospects that will enable you to build a powerful foundation for your marketing campaign/s. Cost, $1475. Timing, about 2 weeks.

EXTERNAL SEO. SEO is an Internet-era acronym that has become a niche industry in itself. SEO stands for search engine optimization and, in simple terms, means managing the text on one’s website in such a way so that the search engines can and do find it.

External SEO is a unique new service that drives your site up the search engine rankings by using sophisticated Internet tools. This is a service that an associate of mine provides and it works wonderfully. I have used it personally and with clients. It’s a very effective. Cost: This service is $1435 but is offered to my clients for $1299. This covers 4 months of optimizing designed to jack your brand up the search engine rankings. As competition on the Internet is fierce, after 4 months, you have the option for an ongoing maintenance contract for $230 per month. Your call.

VIDEOS. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth…countless thousands.

Videos can tell your story driving your message into the minds of your customers in ways nothing else can. Videos can be posted on your website, on YouTube, and / or sent as video clips to your customers or prospects via email. I work with a professional video producer. COST $1,000.

VIDEO POPULARIZATION.

Another service is to take the video and popularize the Hell out of it. With this service, the video is posted on YouTube and then traffic is driven to it in great volume. Minimum guarantee of 4,500 views of your video in 90 days. Cost $295 for three months of video popularization (prices breaks for more than one video).

YouTube video is a great way to get the word out on your product or service. YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine on the internet right behind Google, YouTube’s owner. You can put a link to a YouTube video in your email signature, on Facebook, in promo pieces at practically no cost.

SOCIAL MEDIA. If you don’t have a social media presence, you should. It is where the world of marketing and PR live today. We can arrange for you to get set up on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and others. Not only will you have a presence on those sites, but we will arrange to have a social media press kit built for you like the one below, which is not only a mini website about your business in the guise of a business card, it can also contain a video. This entire package is available for $399.

We also have access to seriously expanded social media services if you are in need of a great deal more kick on the Internet.

SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGEMENT. If you want someone to manage your social media sites (whether we have had them built for you or you have put it up yourself), we can arrange for that service as well, with pricing dependent on how aggressive you want be on your campaigns.

So, that’s the menu. The dessert comes after we’ve done the work and you have increased your sales.

If we can be of service to you in any of these areas, please let me know via any of the contact channels noted below.

And if there is any other service in the area of surveys or marketing or social media that you are in need of, but don’t see above, let me know. We may be able to provide them for you or, if not, refer you to someone who can.

Best,
Bruce
